#18. The one where I found love again. (J's story)

I got married. And then I got divorced.

And when I got divorced, I was sure that was it for me. As a man, when I get invested like that and it ends unexpectedly, it takes a lot out of me. I used to feel like that with break ups back in the day.

But this was a marriage- of 8 years. So it definitely took a lot out of me.

And by the way, I was comfortable with not being in another relationship ever again. I was going to focus on my career, my kids, and my family. Maybe even get a social life.

But one day when I was at an event, I met this lady. We clicked immediately. When I met her, I remember thinking I would be okay with just being friends. But as soon as we started the banter, wah! I knew this one I have to pursue her. So at the end of the event, I asked her for her number. But she said no. I was confused. I thought we were getting along.

But kijana ni kujitetea. So I gave her my number and told her she can reach out when she is ready.

A few months go by and nothing. Not even a text. So I take the L and move on.

Then one day when I was at the supermarket, I get a call while I was at the till. I immediately cut it because I was about to pay for my things.

But when I was done, I called back and guess who it was? It was her! I pick up and we immediately crack up just like the first time. I invite her for dinner and she agrees.

On the first date I tell her about my kids and she says she also has one child. That makes me feel good because she gets it.

That first date felt like talking to a friend. I told her how I thought she was never going to reach out and how I had lost all hope. I told her how I even tried to look for her on Instagram and Facebook but couldn't find her. Yaani I had lost hope kabisa.

She said she thought I was as player because of how I was dressed that day but one day she had just decided to see if she was right.

I'm glad she reached out that day because now we've been together for 3 years and I'm planning to propose to her. She knows that's the next step for us she just doesn't know when I will do it.

She also gave me the permission to send this in.

I'm glad I gave her my number that day.

#19. The one where I noticed how far I've come.

I was pulled over the other day and as a black American it can be a dangerous situation with cops. But throughout the whole situation I only answered questions that I knew were neutral and remembered
